چکیده

PARKER, JOHN C., AND ROGER L. SNOW. Influence of external A TP on permeability and metabolism of dog red blood cells. Am. J. Physiol. 223(4) : 888-893. 1972.-Dog red blood cells undergo a rapid increase in Na-K permeability and an alteration in physical properties when exposed to external ATP in concentrations greater than 0.1 mM. The effect is reversible on washing the cells, and it can be prevented by Ca and Mg ions. A variety of other nucleotides and chelators do not share this action on the dog red cell membrane. Simultaneous measurements of cation and *anion flux show that only the former is affected by ATP. The implications of these results for models of membrane permeability are discussed.

Dog red blood cells: Na and K diffusion potentials with extracellular ATP

External ATP causes a prompt increase in the Na and K permeability of dog red blood cells. By manipulating intra- and extracellular ion composition it is possible to observe ATP-induced net fluxes which can be explained in terms of the contribution of Na or K diffusion potentials to the membrane potential. Measurements of membrane voltage by a fluorescent dye technique confirm the existence of ...

A Biomechanical Approach for the Study of Deformation of Red Cells in Narrow Capillaries

This model focuses on the behavior of capillary-tissue fluid exchange system when the diameter of the capillary is less than that of red cell. In vivo and in vitro observations indicate that the width of the gap between the red cell and the vessel wall is generally small compared to the radius of the capillary for a single file flow of red cell in narrow vessel, particularly if the vessel diame...

Oxidants, ATP depletion, and endothelial permeability to macromolecules.

Oxidants can reversibly increase the permeability of endothelium to ions and macromolecules. Oxidants also deplete ATP in cultured endothelial cells. We asked if oxidant-mediated ATP depletion, alone, accounted for the effects of oxidants on endothelial permeability to macromolecules. When porcine pulmonary artery endothelial cells were exposed to 2.5 mmol/LH2O2, ATP was depleted to 31.7% +/- 1...

Role of calcium in volume regulation by dog red blood cells

Dog red blood cells (RBC) are shown to regulate their volume in anisosmotic media. Extrusion of water from osmotically swollen cells requires external calcium and is associated with net outward sodium movement. Accumulation of water by osmotically shrunken cells is not calcium dependent and is associated with net sodium uptake. Net movements of calcium are influenced by several variables includ...

The Relationship Between Severity of Hypothyroidism and Red Blood Cells Indices

Background and Aims: Thyroid hormones have an important role in metabolism and regulation of the red blood cells (RBCs). Thyroid dysfunction induces various effects on blood cells such as anemia through reducing the oxygen metabolism. For the first time, we aimed to determine the effects of severity activation of hypothyroidism on RBCs indices in patients with hypothyroidism. Materials and Met...
